HIST 195 Students traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico, to conduct archival research on the Movement of African-descended people in Mexico with Dr. Sabrina Smith. They visited the Biblioteca Juán de Córdova, Archivo General del Estado de Oaxaca, Biblioteca Burgoa, and the Archivo Histórico de Notarías Oaxaca. Read the students' reflections on their week-long research experience in Oaxaca on Instagram.

"I loved being able to consult documents both digitally and manually. The trip solidified for me that I want to pursue this research in graduate school. It was an honor to work alongside my classmates and Dr. Smith. While I enjoyed doing the archival work, exploring Oaxaca was special and something I will cherish forever." (Virginia Mateo)

"Doing research in Oaxaca was a very unique & amazing experience since we are able to work with archives that hold lots of untold history. These archives that we transcribe hold information about enslaved people, as well as context about Oaxaca & Mexico's colonization. Studying slavery in Oaxaca is new territory for me, but I find it interesting learning about something that I wasn't taught before. Visiting the archives was such an honor & privilege." (Daniel Lopez)
